Qing-era Blue and White Porcelain Teapot Stand

This pair of blue and white porcelain plates from the Qing Dynasty is a remarkable piece of history, originally crafted in Dehua, China. During that era, such plates were widely exported to Europe and the Americas through the Maritime Silk Road that began in Quanzhou. Some shipments reached their destinations, while others were lost at sea. These two plates are relics I found in an antique market, perhaps once lost to the depths of the ocean.

The artisans of Qing-era Dehua, though not considered artists, were skilled craftsmen who faithfully followed the techniques passed down by their masters. The depictions on these plates, particularly the expressive human figures, carry an artistic charm even today. The subtle brushwork not only captures the emotions of the figures but also unintentionally reflects the layered inking techniques of traditional Chinese painting. Nowadays, these plates are often used as teapot trays in tea ceremonies, particularly in the dry tea method (Gongfu Cha), making them a focal point of the tea setting and a personal statement of the host. Alternatively, they can be displayed as a collectible item, their timeless artistic appeal still captivating viewers.
